Metrics with the unit "(Tons)" in the label are showing the value for U.S. tons, also known as short tons. This is the default unit your Waste entries will be converted to for the graph on the Waste tab if the unit preference is set to "Conventional EPA Units".
- A U.S. ton, or short ton, is equal to 2,000 pounds.
- A metric ton, also known as a tonne, is equal to 2,204.62 pounds.
- A related unit is the British ton, or long ton, which is equal to 2,240 pounds.
For GHG emissions metrics, each of the four metric types (Direct, Indirect, Biomass, and Total) is available as a total amount in metric tons "(Metric Tons CO2e)" or as an intensity value in kilograms per square foot "(kgCO2e/ft2)". See How are my Total GHG Emissions calculated?
Note: If the unit preference for the account is changed to "Metric Units", the graph on the Waste tab will convert entries to Metric Tons (rather than U.S. tons) and any metrics in that unit will have a "(Metric Tons)" label.
Your preference for metric or Conventional EPA Units can be changed in the Account Settings panel for the user account. Please see the FAQ: How do I benchmark and report using metric units (GJ, m², etc.)?
