What is my Waste Diversion Rate?

  • Updated

Your Waste Diversion Rate is the percentage of your Total Waste Materials that get Recycled, Composted, and/or Donated/Reused. For example, if you generate 100 total pounds of waste per year and 75 pounds get recycled/composted/donated, then your Waste Diversion Rate is 75% (75 pounds Diverted Waste ÷ 100 pounds of Total Waste = .75 = 75%)

These are the related metrics that you can pull into reports:

  • Total Waste (Disposed and Diverted) (Tons)
  • Disposed Waste (Tons)
  • Diverted Materials (Tons) - which is the sum of these:
    • Recycled Materials (Tons)
    • Donated/Reused Materials (Tons)
    • Composted Materials (Tons)
  • Diversion Rate (%) = Diverted Materials ÷ Total Waste (Disposed and Diverted)

Disposed Waste includes:

  1. Disposed Waste - Landfill
  2. Disposed Waste - Incineration
  3. Disposed Waste - Waste to Energy (see this FAQ: Why isn’t Waste-to-Energy counted towards overall waste diversion?)
  4. Disposed Waste - Unknown/Other Destination

If your are not recylcing, donating, or composting any waste, then your Diversion Rate will be "Not Available" because the values of all three of these will be "Not Available." Not Available can be interpreted as a Diversion Rate of 0.
